Supreme Leader's Representative: Baqi Cemetery, A Unique Piece in World

Supreme Leader's Representative in Hajj and Pilgrimage Affairs Hojjat al-Islam Seyed Abdolfattah Navvab described Baqi Cemetery as an irreplaceable place where the Holy Imams of Shia and their companions are buried, but turned into ruins with the advent of radical Wahhabis.

According to the Hajj Information Base, head of the Iranian pilgrims considered the Baqi cemetery as an irreplaceable part in the world and said that the graves of the oppressed Imams of Baqi (AS) are the most valuable graves after the Prophet's mausoleum, which shines light on the heavens and the earth.

Hojjat al-Islam Navvab, who spoke in Qom at the pre-congress ceremony of Baqi, the burial place of Imams (AS) and their companions, said that Baqi is the secret keeper of the nights of worship of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) and many of the companions of the Holy Prophet in this part of the earth are of high scientific and spiritual degrees.

While the graves of the elders are honored and respected all over the world, unfortunately, the radical Wahhabis in 1926 desecrated the graves of Imams of Baqi (AS) and with pressure and threats forced people of that time to destroy the graves of Baqi, the Supreme Leader's representative said.

He pointed out that in those days, except for the mausoleum of Hazrat Hamzah (AS), the rest of the grave in Medina were destroyed by the servants and the people themselves of that time.

Hojjat al-Islam Navvab recalled that by looking at the historical period, we realize that these graves were honored and glorified for six centuries from the Seljuk era, but with the advent of radical Wahhabis, they became ruins.

He pointed out that the graves of elders in all countries are considered as their honor and document of identity, adding that in some Islamic countries, the Wahhabi way of thinking destroyed all these works so that no name or sign of the Prophet's family would had been left.

Hojjat al-Islam Navvab said the second phase of the destruction of Baqi's graves to be on 31st Farvardin 1305 Hijri Shamsi (in April 1926) and according to the fatwa of Wahhabis, adding, "In this phase, they did not spare any of the graves of the Companions and the associates of the Ahl al-Bayt and the Prophet and they destroyed the remains and the relics of those great people.

Dr. Mohammad Hossein Rajabi Devani, contemporary historian, was another speaker of this conference who spoke about the historical process of the formation of Baqi cemetery.

In his speech, the head of Iranology Foundation explained the events that caused the destruction of the graves of Baqi and other Companions.
